LA To NYC: Fashion Must Haves

Recently I moved from our Santa Monica, California, office to our smaller east coast office in New York City. I’ve lived in New York before, so I knew the fashion “decisions” I’d been making in sunny SoCal wouldn’t be acceptable in “the fashion capital of the world“. At our Beachbody® corporate office, I could wear gym pants, tennis shoes, and a T-shirt any day of the week. When I wanted to “dress up,” I’d wear a sundress and some nice sandals.

Here in NYC, however, it just feels weird to walk down the street in workout gear or flip-flops when everyone else is dressed to the nines. Now that I’ve been here for a while, though, I feel like I’ve gotten back in the swing of things fashion-wise, and I’ve realized that it’s not that hard to look like a stylish city girl. Here are the five wardrobe staples every well-dressed woman should have if she wants to look like she belongs in chic, trendy New York City.

1. Leather boots. These are so versatile. You can wear them at the beginning of the fall with a dress and cardigan, or in the cold of winter to help keep you warm. The weather can be harsh in NYC, and boots are a great way to protect your feet from the cold rain, snow, and slush (they can double as rain-boots or snow boots in the winter months. Just make sure you get them treated with leather protector). Piperlime.com has great options (with free returns!), or try DSW—they have great deals on designer boots, often at a savings of 50 percent or more.

2.  Anything black. Yes, New Yorkers love black! But who can blame them? Black is slimming and matches everything, and when you wear it, you can look dressed up as easily as you can look dressed down. A basic black dress can be worn any month of the year, and can be the most versatile item in your closet. In the spring, you can wear terrific black pumps and accessories. In the fall and winter, black leggings, sweaters, and boots are always great. The black dress will become the most versatile item in your closet. And when you have a great pair of black slacks, you can change your look by changing from heels to flats, and changing your tops from dressy to casual.

3.  Jeggings. I know some women may still be a little iffy on wearing a skin-tight pair of leggings that look like jeans. I used to be one of them, so I get it. But jeggings are actually flattering on all body types. You can balance them with the right top and look completely on trend. Just work with your body type when pairing a top with the jeggings—ladies like me with wider hips might want to wear something a little looser on top, the more flowing the better. If you’re shorter, make sure the top hits right below the belt loops. If you want to make your legs look longer, wear a longer top with a shorter jacket or cardigan to lengthen those gams. The great thing about jeggings is that you can wear them to work with flats and a blazer, wear them out on the town with a great pair of pumps, or dress them down on the weekend by tucking them into a pair of boots. The lines will make your legs and booty look great, and because they aren’t baggy, you’ll look slim and sleek.

4.  Colorful solid or print scarves. I’m sure you all already own at least one wonderful scarf. I have eight, in a variety of colors and patterns—some plain, some sparkly. A scarf is the key accessory for a New York City girl. Scarves can pull together a wide variety of outfits; they can really elevate your look to a new level. Plus they keep your neck warm during the chilly months, or when your office blasts the AC in the summer. If you’re feeling wild, go for a leopard print. If you’re wearing your all-black outfit, try a bright pink or blue scarf to punch it up.

5.  Waist-cinching belt. Now, here’s an accessory I’ve seen even more often here in New York City than I’ve seen high heels. Women here love to flaunt their beautiful curves by cinching their waists with a statement belt. You can wrap a belt around your dress to give it a more flattering line, or wear a belt outside your cardigan to give your outfit a new look. You can even use a belt to help make your winter coat look more feminine. I’ve been wearing waist-cinching belts for a while, because I find they help me more than double my wardrobe. Sometimes I just throw a belt around a dress to give it a little something extra. When it gets colder, I take that same dress, layer a cardigan over it, belt the waist over the sweater, and viola!, a brand-new look, sometimes for a dress I’ve owned for years. Just be careful when choosing waist-cinching belts—you want to make sure they’re not too tight, so they’re comfortable both when you’re sitting and when you’re standing (you don’t want to feel like you’re wearing a corset). If a belt has some elastic components, you can change its position to change the look of your outfit. Wear it right under your ribcage at your natural waistline, or wear it a little lower to make your torso look longer.

So there we have it: five wardrobe essentials that’ll make you look like a city girl. As you’ve read over this list, you probably noticed one or more items you’ve been wearing for years. But that’s how fashion is—constantly recycling and renewing itself.  It may be the “fashion capital of the world”, but we’re all women – we just want to look fabulous and be comfortable while doing it!

Today there are a growning number of website community marketplaces that showcase custom hoodies with graphics and slogans that have been created by 1000′s of pro-designer-shopkeepers. Their designs and sayings spann a huge variety topics and categories.

Now you too can design and create your own hoodie. It has become fairly easy and fun to make your own hoodie online using the lastest and greatest apparel designing systems. These new online make your own apparel systems have robust sets of tools that enable you to design and create your own hooded sweatshirt or t shirt apparel.

Hoodies are no longer just popular for males. Clothing designers have created hoodie that fit the frame of young women as well. They do not fit large and bulky the way most men prefer their hoodie. Hoodie for women are made to fit a woman’s frame to still accentuate her figure. The urban look of the hoodie compliments both men and women when wearing a cool pair of jeans and some fly kicks.

The hoodie is not limited just to the urban clothing scene. Surfers and skateboarders are big fans of the hoodie as well. It is not uncommon to see both surfers and skateboarders sporting their favorite brand of hoodie on the beach or at the skate park. Popular brands for these hoodie include Element, Billabong, and Hurley. Not only are hoodie creating a fashion statement, but they are practical for a surfer who is attempting to stay warm after catching some early morning waves. Hoodie will also always remain popular among the college crowd. There isn’t a university that you can visit that doesn’t proudly display their college name on a hooded sweatshirt. It is like an unwritten law for college students to own at least one college hoodie.

What’s In and What’s Out This Fall

So many styles to choose from, so little knowledge of what to actually wear. Granted, I always say that it’s best you wear whatever you love and whatever you feel most comfortable in, but we always need a little guidance nevertheless, especially since there’s so much out there! So here’s what designers and celebrities are liking and not liking this fall.

In: A Long Coat

Long, White Coat

Because let’s face it, it keeps you warmer than a short jacket! But long coats are great because they look good with anything, and there are tons of styles to choose from. I always like to wear my long coat with a scarf that I can change every day.

In: Pink

Pink Dress

Although I find the color pink to be arriving a little late into the year, I still think it’ll be a good pick-me-up from the usual blacks and browns we see throughout the cold seasons.

In: Dare to be Daring

Dare to be Daring

So this season it’s all about being daring and creative. Remember, things don’t have to match anymore, so try to stay away from that…even though it can be very hard! Try an ensemble that you would never even think of trying and see where it goes. But, maybe, just don’t go as far as the model in the picture. Never copy a runway look down to a tee…it’s strictly reserved for the runway and not the streets(of course there are a few exceptions).

In: Juxtaposition

fall-09-geren-ford

“Fall brings a juxtaposition,” says Geren Lockhart, the creative mastermind behind Geren Ford. “[You’ll see] hardware against delicate silks and tough-washed cottons and denim, and pleats and gathers shown with leather and vintage-washed fabrics.” “Silhouettes will be simple, yet constructed with hand-finishing, like painting and paillettes,” the designer adds.

Out: Bubble Skirts

Bubble Skirt

No one really enjoyed those bubble skirts…they just made you look wider in reality. This season, expect to see a lot straighter skirts such as pencil skirts, and with the volume emphasis on top rather than on the bottom.

Out: Harem Pants

harem pants

Thank God for that, harem pants are a thing of the past…for now at least. Instead, opt for pants that flatter your figure instead of hindering it. Go for skinny jeans or boot-leg.

In: 80s Biker Chick

biker chick

You may or you may not like this, but the 80s music-video look is back, and it’s all about leather skirts,  short leather jackets and tees with square, cubes, lines, and plaid are in. Don’t be afraid to experiment with this look, but just make sure you stick to 1 or 2 items from this era. It’s supposed to be modern 80s, not flashback 80s.

In: Shoulders

One Shoulder Dress

This fall, you’ll see a lot of bare shoulders and that’s because a lot of styles will have off-the-shoulder  or one-shoulder looks. Go for a one-shoulder dress that you can wear anywhere at night…you might have to keep your shoulders covered at work!

In: Thigh High Boots

christian louboutin thigh high boots

I’m a huge fan of thigh-high boots, but as I’ve mentioned in a previous post, they’re super hard to find unless you’re willing to spend over a grand. Still looking…

10 Modern Halloween Costumes

Halloween is a time of dressup and fun, and every year, I find myself buying yet another expensive, but cheaply made costume that I never wear again. This year, while contemplating how to dress up, I realized that I didn`t really want to spend a ton of dough on yet another bad costume. Thankfully, Cosmo put out 10 of their best Halloween costume ideas and we think that you may not even have to go out and buy anything to pull off these costumes!

#1.Kanye West and Taylor Swift

Kanye West and Taylor Swift Halloween Costumes

Possibly one of the biggest celebrity blunders this year was Kanye West’s outburst at the VMAs, so why not take advantage of it and have your beau dress us up Kanye, while you play the part of lovely Taylor? All he’ll need is a pair of jeans, a black button-up shirt, and a pair of those “miniblind” sunglasses. To play Taylor, wear a pretty ball gown, curl your strands, add some sparkling jewelry and, if you can, find a prop Moon Man as your award.

#2. Beyonce in Single Ladies
Beyonce Single Ladies Halloween Costume
By now, you must have undoubtedly seen Beyonce’s Single Ladies video and are aware of her outfits. Pull this off with two other girlfriends, or 2 guys even (that would make it super funny). Wear a black or a black and white leotard, pantyhose, and a pair of heels. Don’t forget to bust out the moves once the song comes on.

#3. Chuck Bass and Blair Waldorf

Chuck Bass and Blair Waldorf Halloween Costumes

Who doesn’t wanna be super-bitchy Blair Waldorf? The question is…will your boyfriend be up to wearing a nice suit? If so, all you need to do is wear a knock-off designer dress (not a real one…it’s still just Halloween after all), some pearls, and of course, the headband. Don’t forget to gel your guy’s hair back!

#4. Mad Men

Mad Men Halloween Costume

If you’re a fan of the show Mad Men, then you know it’s all about the glamorous early 60s. Find a low hemline dress…thrift stores are a great option. Throw on a pair of long gloves, curl your hair, and add some pearls. Your guy can don a classy brown suit.

#5. The Hangover Guys

Hangover Guys Halloween Costume

If your guy and his buddies need some Halloween costume ideas, this is the perfect one right here. By now I’m sure you’ve all seen the movie The Hangover, and there really is nothing funnier than the 3 guys. Zach/Alan’s character will need a beard and a baby, Brad/Phil’s character should be looking sharp in a button-down, and Ed/Stu’s character needs to make sure to black out a tooth.

#6. Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga Halloween Costume

If you really wanna turn some heads this Halloween, there is no better way to go than with Lady Gaga. Choose from many of her outrageous outfits, but just be sure to don a blonde, curly wig and add some huge square-shaped sunglasses to complete the look.

#7. New Moon Characters

New Moon Characters Halloween Costume

It’s definitely been a vampire’s year, especially with so many new shows and movies about vampires, so it’s only natural that you dress up like one, right? To get this look, dress all in black, put a pair of fangs in, whiten your complexion, and mess up your hair. So easy!

#8. Bollywood Dancers

Bollywood Dancers Halloween Costume

I love this costume idea because it can be done alone or with a group of girlfriends. Inspired by Slumdog Millionaire and PCD’s Jai Ho video, these costumes are a little harder to pull off but well worth it. Make sure your costume has tons of colors, lots of gold bling, and some midriff showing.

#9. Kardashian Sisters

Kardashian Sisters Halloween Costume

Whether you love em or hate em, the Kardashian sisters are pretty much everywhere, so why not take advantage of this great costume idea? Grab two friends and assign a big diamond ring to the Khloe, fake a baby bump for the Kourtney, and try out a butt pad for the Kim.

#10. Twitter Bird

Twitter Bird Halloween Costume

As stupid as this may sound, the Twitter bird costume would actually be pretty funny. Instead of going out and buying a blue bird costume, go to a craft’s store and buy some blue feathers. Stick them to a cheap blue dress, put on a yellow beak and yellow tights and you’re all set!

2009 Spring and Summer Skirts

This year at the Paris Spring/Summer Fashion Show, designers came up with some innovative ideas that not only look amazing on the runway, but that you could actually wear on the street. Sure, you might not be able to pay designer prices, but if you’re a good shopper, you know that you can find similar pieces pretty much everywhere else. So check out the hottest spring and summer skirt collections straight from the Paris runways.

The Neon Trend: Would You Wear It?

Neon has made a comeback this year, as we’ve seen in on plenty of runways, and fortunately, it doesn’t remind us of the 80s too much. When I think of neon, it definitely brings me back to the 80s and early 90s…and I can’t say I loved the style. But this year, neon is a little different as designers are bringing it back with a touch of flare.

Neon Colors

So how can you incorporate neon into your wardrobe? Simple. Just wear one neon item at a time, and do it with good taste too. Start off nice and slow with a neon colored accessory such as a scarf, belt, or bag. Wear it with dark and/or neutral colors to offset the bright neon shade and you’re good to go!

If you’re bold enough, you can go for a bright neon dress, such as the one in the picture. Pair it with some sexy neutral pumps and a neutral colored bag and you’re good to go. As for the neon shoes, I don’t think that would be something I would wear, but if you think you can pull it off, more power to ya!

Top 10 Summer Styles

Summer is nearing and we’re all very excited to shed our heavy winter coats and jump into something shorter and sexier. So what’s on the agenda for this summer? Here are the top 10 styles for this spring and summer- you won’t wanna miss this!

Toga Goddess

Toga Dress

Toga dresses are super sexy and powerful. Try one on and you’ll see why I say this! Grab a loose, one-shoulder dress for the summer and pair it with flats, strappy sandals, wrap sandals, stilettos or wedges. You can either wear a toga dress long or short – the choice is all yours!

Pink, Hearts and Bows

Heart Dress

It’s the season to look cute and adorable so get out your heart-printed frocks, bow enhanced tops and pink everything. Don’t be afraid to don a little love on your sleeve.

Citrus Hues

Citrus Dress

Put away drab, depressing colors such as grey and black and bring out your fruity colors. Lemon, raspberry, papaya, and all bright tropical colors are a major summer staple so make sure to stock up!

Classic Cut-Outs

Cut-Out Dress

If you like a little class in your wardrobe, cut-out couture is all the rage. Choose cutwork clothing that everyone will be talking about the next day.

One-Piece Black Swimsuit
One-Piece Black Swimsuit

Classic styles are back and with that comes the return of the classic one-piece black swimsuit. Especially after a long, harsh winter where we might have put some weight one, the one-piece cannot fail.

Animal Instinct

Animal Print Dress
Animal prints are still big this summer just like they were last fall. So don’t be afraid to venture out of your comfort zone and follow your animal instincts.

High Hemlines, Short Skirts

High Hemlines

I say that if you’ve got it, flaunt it. This summer, dare to bare all with high hemlines and short skirts – just make sure you can pull it off!

Clashing Prints

Clashing Prints

If you know how to do it properly, clashing prints are all the rage this summer. Mix and match different prints and colors to pull off a confident look.

Sheer Mania

Sheer Top

Sheer fabrics are ultra sexy this summer, so don’t be afraid to wear them. Make sure that when wearing sheer fabrics you wear them with class…put a little cardigan over a sheer top.

Bold Accessories

Bold accessories

Every girl has a bold, look-at-me accessory in her closet whether it be a bag, a pair of crazy shoes or a big necklace. Show them off this summer with tons of confidence and you’ll soon catch everyone’s eye.

Must-Have Holiday Essentials

The holidays are quickly approaching and your closet might need a little revamping. Whether you have holiday office parties, fancy New Year’s Eve plans, or just planning to shop till you drop, these finds will keep you looking hot and warm all at the same time. So here are your must-have holiday essentials.

Booties

Booties

Booties, shoe boots, ankle boots, whatever you wanna call them, are HOT! They look great with anything from skirts, to tights, to skinny jeans. Pick up a pair of booties in a neutral color so you can wear them all throughout the season, or, if you’ve got a little bit of extra dough on the side, pick out a festive pair.

Draped Dresses

Silver draped dress
Drapped dresses are one of my favorite styles simply because they look good even if you’re a little bloated that day. With that being said, make sure you pair up a draped dress with a pair of heels or knee-high boots.

Faux Fur Vest

Faux Fur Vest

Faux fur is back in this season, so why not warm up with a cute faux fur vest that you can throw over anything. What’s great about these vests is that they can look either casual or dressy depending on what else you’re wearing them with!

Dark Nail Polish

Blue Nail Polish

Stay away from the clich red hues this season, and opt for a more trendier color such as dark navy blue, black, midnight blue, etc. These colors are perfect for the holidays, plus you’ll be making a statement!

Crystal Earrings

Crystal Earrings

There’s nothing more festive than a pair of delicate drop-crystal earrings. Wear with with your hair up or down, they’ll sparkle and shine all night!

Cardigan

Cardigan

The cardigan is the number one must-have this season and there really is no better way to keep warm during the cold, winter months. Just throw a cardigan over your holiday outfit and cinch it with a belt!

Ruffles

Ruffled Shoes

This holiday season, pick ruffled everything from ruffled shoes, to tops, to skirts. Just be sure to only wear one ruffled item at a time and keep the accessories to a minimum.

Sequins

Sequins

Sequins are a big part of the holiday festivities so show your spirit with a sequined scarf or hot. Just a little sequin goes a long way, so make sure you don’t over do it.
