Fashion designer Stella McCartney debuted her latest triumph for autumn/winter last week; instead this time it was on stage instead of a catwalk.
Stella’s designs were in fact for her father’s (legendary Beatles star Sir Paul McCartney) ballet which he had written his first classical dance score for. Collaborating with Peter Martins, whom he had met at a party, the Ballet Master of the New York City Ballet, Sir Paul McCartney had naturally asked his daughter to design the costumes for Ocean’s Kingdom.
Working closely to create the perfect costumes Stella told the BBC “I am providing a technical need within the whole structure,” whilst asking her father, “‘How do you see this? Do you want tutus?’ We had to make it all work well together; the music, the choreography and the visuals.”
The final result was a colour wheel of fun and emotion with Aztec print suits created by a company called Dyenamix, who use several unique techniques such as hand silk screening, batik and foiling to create the perfect look.
As the love story was set in an underwater kingdom there were lots of sea blues and dark hues alongside flashes of bright colours and a fluidity in the fabrics which allowed the dancers to perform without begin constricted by design.
Obviously extremely pleased of their accomplishment Stella lastly noted: “You have that emotion of feeling very proud and then you realise you are working with ‘Sir Paul McCartney’ and that’s really exciting.”
Stella – who also designs a performance wear line for Adidas – it seems was thrilled with the final result taking a shy step on stage last week at the David H.Kock theatre to receive a standing ovation at the gala opening.
