For some, fashion designer Alexander ‘Lee’ McQueen’s (as he was know to friends) death was untimely. After struggling with the loss of his mother McQueen hung himself last year. However, there is a ray of light in the iconic designers tragedy.
McQueen, 40, has left nearly all of his estimated £16million fortune to charity, including £50,000 to his pet dogs for their upkeep.
Charities to benefit from McQueen’s generosity range from The Terrence Higgins Trust and Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, which have all received £100,000 each. McQueen, who had an obvious clear love for animals, has also left money to the Blue Cross sick animal centre alongside £100,000 to the London Buddhist Centre; also leaving a substantial amount to his siblings and their children.
The remainder of his estate has been left to the Sarabande charity which shares a name with his spring/summer 2007 collection; also asking that this money be used to fund grants and bursaries to students at Central St Martin’s College of Art and Design where McQueen attended to study fashion.
McQueen’s designs have always been influential with his fashion shows bordering on fanatical displays whilst his designs were brilliantly accomplished and sought after. Therefore it was a shame that so soon after his untimely death his fashion house produced probably the most famous dress in the world for the Duchess of Cambridge to wear on her wedding day.
