As the summer season approaches, the social calendar is bombarded with more events than you can shake a stick at.
At WhatBestToWear, Wimbledon, Ascot and the Investec Derby are the highlights of our summer social calendar.
Getting dressed up for these summer functions is all part of the fun and looking glamorous will ensure you are feeling fabulous throughout the day.
Finding the right dress to wear is one challenge to any special occasion but finding the right hat can be a much harder task.
So at What Best to Wear we have obtained some advice by top hat designer Louis Mariette on not only choosing the most fashionable and appropriate hat, but also how to wear it for any occasion all year round.
Louis Mariette is a famous hat designer who made the world’s most expensive hat (priced at a staggering £1.5million).
In addition he has also been a judge on Britain’s Next Top Model and his creations have been worn by Paris Hilton, Kate Moss, Sophie Dahl and Isabell Kristensen.
Here are Louis’ Top Tips on how to wear a hat:
1) PROPORTION:
It is critical that you are totally honest about your dimensions and if possible have a friend to give feedback on your outfit. Experiment with different hats. If you are shorter, a huge wide brimmed hat may be overpowering so go for smaller size or a fascinator; for more visual impact try bolder colours and trimmings.
2) ANGLES:
The simplest tilt of a hat can give the theatrical expression needed to finish off a look. The brim tilted and angled over one eye can give a mysterious, fun and flirtatious look bringing out an extrovert side of your personality.
3) HAIR:
Ladies invest a lot of time and money on hair and should use this as an opportunity to showcase hair and hat as a bon marriage to create an impact. When opting for a smaller hat or fascinator, wearing it towards one side with your hair style to the opposite side will be alluring and creates an elongated neckline.
4) COLOUR:
Millinery comes in many exciting colours, textures and patterns. Prints can be overwhelming so lean towards block colours with variations on shades. Try to choose colours complimentary to your skin tone. Dark skin tones will suit reds, whereas aqua blues, pinks are well executed with paler tones. Make-up should be toned down if there is a lot happening with a hat: remember this is Derby and not a Brazilian Carnival.
5) EMBELLISHMENTS:
Think about the dress, shoes and handbag, and also how the elements of outfit can be incorporated into your headpiece. This can range from silk flowers to crystals and pearls, Camilla Kerslake (pictured) pulls this off well.

6) LESS IS MORE:
If the hat is very extravagant, keep the dress and jewellery simple.
7) SECURITY:
No ladies, this isn’t a call for a bodyguard, but hairgrips for the race day! Inevitably a gust of wind can make a hat fly like the “Spirit of St Louis” ! Trust me, you will prefer your manicured fingers clutching a flute of champagne rather than chasing a hat!
8) POISE:
After you have spent so much time and energy putting your outfit together, an elegant posture is key - the cameras might be zooming in on you!
9) BEAUTY STARTS FROM WITHIN:
Remember that true beauty starts from within. It is a lifestyle: eating healthy, exercising and looking after your skin will ensure a radiant appearance and self-esteem. Remember your best attribute is your attitude.
