The Wimbledon Championships 2011 commenced this Monday and just to get things off to a start there was the Wimbledon Tennis Association pre-party at Kensington Roof Gardens in London. Attended by former and current tennis players and an array of celebrities this party sure got the British tennis championships off to a flying start.

This year the British Fashion Council wanted to become more involved with the female tennis players by raising their fashion profile and so they enlisted a team of top designers to create garments for the tennis stars to wear at the Wimbledon pre-party. Stella McCartney, Burberry, Giles Deacon, Vivienne Westwood and more, dressed tennis competitors such as Serena Williams, Vera Zvonareva, Caroline Wozniacki and others, while Nicholas Kirkwood provided the shoes.
At the party the award for making the most effort goes to tennis player Bethanie Mattek-Sands who arrived in a tennis inspired dress designed by Alex Noble who also creates gowns for Lady GaGa. It was covered in tennis balls, had a fabric skirt attached and she wore patent wedges in the same yellow colour of the balls. Definitely not the wall flower type!
Also wearing a bright colour was Maria Sharapova in a short red dress with tiny slits on the shoulders, accessorised with black ankle boots, black and gold clutch bag and a gold bib necklace. Red hues were also popular with Ana Ivanovic in a strapless mini-dress, Sabine Liski in a luminous coral dress and Jelena Jankovic also in a coral red frock with hanging silk shoulder straps. Socialite Tamara Ecclestone opted for coral footwear but she teamed this with a nude body-con dress.
Actress Naomie Harris attended wearing a shiny metallic looking gold knee-length dress. Due to the brightness of her dress she downplayed her accessories by coordinating her ensemble with muted gold heeled sandals and a black clutch. In order to look effortlessly stylish don’t try lots of trends at once and also if one item you wear is loud and bright, wear it with simpler items so that you do not look gaudy.
But there is always the safe little black dress option as worn by tennis player Caroline Wozniacki and Patsy Kensit. Caroline chose a off the shoulder dress with only one sleeve, which she matched with black heels and she wore her hair in intricate loops on top of her head.
Meanwhile arrived dressed in an emerald green Burberry dress and black heels.
This was the chance for the tennis stars to get glammed up before the competition starts and they don their usual sports attire.
