Investec Derby Festival Celebrity Appearances

The Investec Derby at Epsom can be called the first event of the social season especially as it draws over 100,000 visitors annually.

And with those visitors over the years the Derby has attracted some famous faces and been the place of historical events.

In 1913 suffragette Emily Davison ran in front of George V’s horse in a protest for votes for women. She died four days later from head injuries.


Politicians and Royalty

The Queen attends Investec Derby FestivalAs well as political protests the Derby has attracted numerous politicians and Royalty.

Winston Churchill and his wife Clementine were in attendance in 1950 and King George VI – the Royal who the film The King’s Speech is based on – came along in 1948 with his daughter Elizabeth who still attends today.

Other notable politicians and Royals to have attended the Derby are King George VII, Sir Sultan Mohamed Shah Aga Khan III, Harold Macmillan, Princess Diana, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, Princess Anne and of course, Queen Elizabeth II.

Celebrities

There have also been many visits from Hollywood actors and actresses such as the late Elizabeth Taylor and husband Mike Todd. Accompanying them were Eddie Fisher and his wife Debbie Reynolds; Fisher was soon to leave Debbie and become one of Elizabeth’s eight husbands.

The actor Errol Flynn came to the Derby as did Sir Reginald ‘Rex’ Carey Harrison who drove his convertible Rolls Royce through the crowd in 1971.

Other notable stars to come to the races are Joan Collins, Roger Moore, Michael Owen, Liz Hurley and others.

One of the most eccentric and revered characters to have come to the Derby was Ras Prince Monolulu, a horse racing tipster originally from the West Indies.


Erin O'ConnorHe would wear extravagant clothes with dead pieces so that he stood out in the crowd. Prince Monolulu was famous for shouting phrases, especially “I gotta horse!” which is the title of his autobiography.

This year will more stars in attendance at the Investec Derby including super model, who has been described by Karl Lagerfeld as “one of the best models in the world”.

Erin O onnor will bewearing a bespoke hat designed for her by milliner, Louis Mariette. Together they will be judging the ‘Style on the Downs Competition’, to find the most fashionable lady at this year’s Ladies Day.
