More than just a clan of pretty faces, some of the world’s top supermodels are now the world’s top businesswomen. The Forbes World’s Top-Earning Supermodel 2011 list has been published, and there are some surprises.
Where ten years ago many of the highest earning models were household names, you could be forgiven for drawing a blank at some of the names in this year’s list. A trend is emerging which sees models moving away from TV and Hollywood appearances and closer to Wall Street, taking charge of their earnings and involving themselves more readily in business and philanthropy.

Forbes Top Earning Models list:

1. Gisele Bundchen
The undisputed queen of the supermodels has yet to be surpassed in the earnings stakes. Giselle is a fully fledged entrepreneur and a strong brand in her own right, with a more than a few strings to her financial bow. Along with numerous product endorsements she also has her own line of sandals and owns the Palladium Executive hotel in Brazil. In the last year she has modelled for H&M and increased sales of Pantene in Brazil by 40% as the face of the brand.
2. Heidi Klum
Klum is another example of a successful transition from model to businesswoman. In the last year she has become the face of New Balance and the host of television show Seriously Funny Kids. Previously she hosted, judged and produced TV shows Project Runway and Germany’s Next Top Model and has been involved in everything from column-writing to sandal design.
3. Kate Moss
As one of the most famous and controversial top models in the world, Kate Moss turns a healthy profit. Moss has secured her earnings with her Dior beauty campaign, hugely successful Topshop line and the launch of her own bag collection for Longchamp – a true British entrepreneur.
4. Adriana Lima
The Brazilian Victoria’s Secret Angel has been Ricardo’s Tisci favourite face for long time, allowing her to work for Spanish label Loewe and become the fourth best paid model in the last year. Beyond her extensive list of modelling campaigns, Lima has also taken acting roles alongside charitable work in her native Brazil.
5. Alessandra Ambrosio
Ambrosio has appeared in lucrative campaigns for Dolce & Gabbana, Moschino and Brazilian sportswear brand Colcci in the last year. She also previously launched her own line of swimwear and held the role of National Ambassador for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
6. Daria Werbowy
The Polish model has generated a fine profit in the last year, participating in campaigns for labels including Yves Saint Laurent, Versace and H&M, and holding a contract as the face of cosmetic Lancôme. Her campaign history is diverse, ranging from high street brands to luxury retailers Missoni and Chanel.
7. Lara Stone
Fasion “it girl” Lara Stone has opened shows for the likes of Giles Deacon, Isabel Marant, Christopher Kane, Fendi, and MaxMara. The three times Vogue cover girl is one of the new faces on the list, thanks to an exclusive contract with Calvin Klein as the face of CkOne collection. She has previously worked on high end campaigns for luxury giants Prada and Versace among others.
8. Carolyn Murphy
The only American model on the list has turned over a healthy $4.3 Million as the face of Estée Lauder and her long-standing contracts with Tom Ford and Tiffany & Co. She has appeared on the cover of Vogue four times and enjoyed numerous profitable contracts in her many years in the business.
9. Natalia Vodianova
The nine times cover of Vogue has achieved considerable success across runway, editorial and advertising campaigns and this year banks $4 Million thanks in part to her appearance in Guerlain’s fragrance campaign. Natalia devotes a significant portion of her time to her charity the Naked Heart Foundation. In honour of her philanthropic work Harper’s Bazaar awarded Vodianova Inspiration of the Year in 2010.
10. Candice Seanpoel
South African Candice debuts this year replacing Miranda Kerr in the top ten. Since starting out with Victoria’s Secret she has appeared in high-end campaign and editorial work, including an appearance in Italian Vogue. Despite recent weight-related controversy she’s been tipped as the world’s next top model. Judging by the still-thriving careers of those at the top of the list, she could have a highly lucrative and varied career ahead of her.
